Abstract
<PICT:0949130/C1/1> Rotary furnace equipment for burning lime or cement includes means for moving the ignition point 38 in the opposite direction to changing material temperatures sensed by a device 64 covering area 157 at or near the maximum material temperature. Movement of the ignition point is controlled generally by the temperature of the combustion air supplied by a fan 35 below a reciprocating, clinker-cooling grate 18 and heated further by a burner 50 within the hood 16. Variations in the depth of material on the grate 18 are detected by a pressure sensing device 58 below the grate and corrected by the operator through a rheostat 60 controlling a magnetic clutch 31 in the grate drive 22. A temperature sensing device 70 located in the ascending gas stream above the grate enables the fuel supply to the burner 50 to be controlled. This fuel is supplied by a branch 53 controlled by valve 55 from the main supply, or, preferably, by a separate pipe 54 controlled by valve 56. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the burner 50 is disposed in a separate flue opening into the hood 16. The control system takes account of the differences between observed and desired temperatures, both of the air and the treated material (see Division F4). The formation of hardened rings in the furnace is inhibited, and a uniform quality product obtained.
