The printed circuit winding in a planar gap rotary electrical machine have little or no radial portions but comprises several oblique portions, e.g. 19 .. 21 in Fig. 7, or an arcuate shape, e.g. 23 in Fig. 9, or a combination of straight and arcuate portions. The winding may be lap- or wave-wound and may form the rotor winding of a machine having a permanent magnet field structure the pole shoes 14 of which may be shaped, e.g. at 19, 20, Fig. 13, to accord with that of the rotor printed conductors. The magnets 12, 21, 22 may each be replaced by two magnets if the pole shoe shaping permits. Specifications 902,295 and 931,654 also are referred to.
