[Also in Division B8] A device for detecting absence of or soft ness in, for example, a cigarette in a packaging machine &c. comprises a feeler which is periodically advanced to engage the article and if no article is present or less resistance than desired is felt, permits air escape from one side of a diaphragm, movement of which initiates an alarm signal and for ejection of a faulty article. The feeler 4 is resiliently projected from a chamber 3 advanced periodically by a cam 31 towards cigarettes 1. Pulses of air are supplied to the chamber 3 and to a balance chamber 16 by a cam operated diaphragm pump 9. The chambers 3 and 16 communicate with a differential capacity transducer 19. If the feeler projects beyond a normal amount, air may escape through its ports 8 causing movement of the transducer diaphragm 20 and operation of signal &c. producing means 25. In a further form (not shown), the chamber 16 and pump are eliminated and pressure air supplied from a main.
