Abstract
948,886. Turbines. CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO. May 31, 1962, No. 20987/62. Heading FIT. A centripetal fluid turbine comprising a rotor and a nozzle ring member has the rotor mounted concentrically within the nozzle ring and having passages receiving driving fluid from passages in the nozzle ring inwardly directed to the circumference of the rotor, the rotor passages being straight drilled holes alternately 'inclined toward opposite sides of the rotor to exhaust the fluid and to enable them to be closely spaced around the periphery of the rotor. A turbine rotor 10 comprises an outer ring portion 11, web 12 and a hub 13 having drilled passages 17, 17a aligned at their inlet ends and extending inwardly so as to open alternately on opposite sides of web 12. A nozzle ring 16 having drilled passages 15 surrounds the rotor 10 and is supplied with gas from a manifold 15a. Passages 15, 17, 17a are inclined to ensure that gases are exhausted radially from the rotor 10 with little or no whirl velocity. A seal formed by annular fins 18, 18a on rotor 10 and grooves 19, 19a on side plates 20, 20a reduces leakage around the rotor. The construction ensures that no axial thrust is transmitted to the shaft 14.
