Abstract

948,765. Laminates. DYMO INDUSTRIES Inc. Aug. 11, 1960 [Sept. 28, 1959], No. 32866/59. Heading B5N. A reinforced tape or sheet, e.g. for making labels or tags, comprises a sheet 11 of a plastics material of the kind which undergoes permanent coldflow deformation at low elongations, and embossment of which produces areas of colour contrasting with the rest of the material, and a laminated backing 12 comprising at least one layer 13 of a pressure-sensitive adhesive adherent to one surface 14 of the sheet 11, and a backing layer 16 which is detachable from the laminated backing 12. The sheet 11 may comprise polyvinyl chloride (P.V.C.) or P.V.C.-polyvinyl acetate copolymers, and may be transparent or coloured, and the layer 16 may be polyethylene or aluminium foil, and may be coloured or metallized. The backing 12 may include one or more fibrous or woven fabric sheets 17 (e.g. a cellulosic or plastics fibre cloth) impregnated with adhesive and secured by pressure-sensitive adhesive 19 to the layer 16. Adhesives mentioned are those prepared from natural rubber, butadienestyrene copolymers, or acrylic, methacrylic or vinyl polymers. Natural and synthetic resin, antioxidants, pigments and plasticizers may be added, e.g. rosin, terpene polymers, pine tar, hydrogenated coumarone-indene resins and methyl ester of hydrogenated rosin. The completed laminate is embossed as indicated to provide a colour contrast between the embossed and unembossed areas. The Provisional Specification describes also additional materials for the sheet 11, namely: steel, nylon, and cellulose acetate-butyrate copolymer, and polyisobutyrene may be used as the adhesive.
