Abstract
948,710. Making books &c. W. MATUSCHKE. May 30, 1962 [May 31, 1961], No. 20908/62. Heading B6A. A method of making books, pads, periodicals or the like comprises slitting a number of webs longitudinally and feeding them in intimate superimposed relation, applying glue or the like to at least one side edge of the superimposed slit webs, applying a cover-forming web or strip to the glued edge, and then cutting the assembly to form the books or the like. Preferably the original webs have been printed and stored in roll form, and are unreeled, passed through slitting apparatus, fed over turning bars which arrange all the slit webs 2 in spaced superimposed relation, and are brought together between a pair of feed rollers 4 (only one roller shown). One edge of the assembly is roughened by a rotatable rasp 6 arranged between the rollers 4 and a second pair of rollers 5, glue &c. is applied by one or more devices 7, and a cover-forming web 8 is fed from a roll, folded into U-form, and applied over the assembly by rollers 9 and 10. The assembly is then fed to a cutter 11 which cuts off the separate books 12. The cutter 11 may be a guillotine, or a band or circular saw, and is moved in the direction of the assembly feed so that the continuous feed of the assembly is not interrupted; or a system of saws spaced axially of a comm on cylinder may be used so that the saws can operate alternatively, the peripheral speed of the cylinder being equal to the linear speed of the book web assembly. In modifications, the cover material is applied as a thin strip to cover only the glued edge of the assembly; or the assembly of webs is of double width, to provide two books side-by-side, which is first slit centrally and then cut off transversely, and both side edges are previously roughened, glued, and covered. If desired, loose insets may be provided by interleaving a narrow web which is not glued by the devices 7. In a further form, an outer protective wrapper web of transparent plastic material is fed in folded U-shape over the book assembly before the cutting thereof, and the free ends of the wrapper are sealed together by adhesive or by high-frequency welding; or two wrapper webs may be used, and their edges sealed to enclose the book assembly before the cutting operation. Instead of single webs 2, each web may be a folded web to provide two sheets of a book.
