Abstract

948,644. Crates. R. B. DARBY. Feb. 22, 1962 [Feb. 28, 1961; May 25, 1961], Nos. 7215/61 and 18864/61. Heading B8P. At least three adjacent walls of a collapsable crate are formed from spaced wooden bars 13 connected by spaced slats 14, the bars being of a length equal to the combined length of the walls, and one face of each bar having 90 degrees, V-notches 12 of a depth slightly less than the depth of the bar. The bars are folded at right angles at the notches and metal reinforcing strips or wires 13 stretched around the corners. The assembly may form the sides and ends of a crate which is completed by a separate bottom, or the bottom and two sides completed by separate slatted sides 16, 17, Fig. 6. The strips 13 are laid over the bars opposite the notches 12 and the slats 14 laid over the strips and stapled to the bars through the strips. When the crate is erected the strips are thus stretched around the outside corners. The sides 16, 17 are secured to the assembly by clips 19 of sheet metal or wire. The crate may be lined with hardboard, and the ends may be higher than the sides for stacking.
