Abstract

948,578. Catalytic igniters. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Dec. 14, 1962, No. 47374/62. Addition to 934,499. Heading F4F. An igniter for a gas turbine engine comprises ten cylindrical foraminate rolls 20 of platinum or rhodium or platinum-rhodium alloy supported in an annular formation in a refractory housing 10 having at least one passage for the flow of combustion mixture. The housing 10 also contains a central cylinder 16 of platinum/ rhodium gauze. The front wall 25 of the housing has a central hole 26 and six equi-spaced holes 27 disposed on the same pitch circle as the ten cylindrical rolls 20. The rear wall of the housing has a central hole 11. The upstream ends of the rolls are covered by a circular disc 21 of platinum/rhodium gauze and their downstream ends are covered by a solid ring 22 of platinum/rhodium alloy. The rolls 20 may have a spiral cross-section. The housing has grooves 30 to enable it to be held by ribs on a V-section stabilizing gutter.
