A suspension of solids in liquid, for instance a suspension of a heavy mineral in water for use in a float and sink process wherein the lighter coal 6 is separated from the heavier stone and other foreign matter 8, has a tube 9 positioned in the suspension 2, or in a separate chamber through which the suspension is passed to isolate a quiescent column of water or other liquid which is in equilibrium with the remainder of the suspension and is free of the solids which separate out, the height of the column above the level of the suspension being a measure of the specific gravity of the suspension. The level may be measured by a direct scale, a pressure capsule or a float, or by measuring the pressure necessary to force air bubbles through the quiescent column from the bottom of a dip tube. A small supply of liquid may be continuously introduced into the quiescent column to maintain a slight downward flow which prevents suspension solids from entering the column.
