Abstract
<PICT:0947866/C2/1> In a continuous process for the manufacture of benzene -1, 3-disulphonic acid wherein sulphur trioxide is reacted with benzene, at a temperature above 100 DEG C., in a closed system of tubes 6, 7 containing a sulphonation-mixture comprising benzene-1, 3-disulphonic acid and sulphuric acid or sulphur trioxide, the mixture is circulated through the system by benzene vapour under pressure, the benzene being introduced into the lower part of the system through inlet 1 either in the vapour or in the liquid state. Sulphur trioxide is introduced through inlet 2; and, if desired, sodium sulphate is introduced through inlet 3. Unreacted benzene vapour is condensed in condenser 5. The finished sulphonation mixture is discharged into receiver 4 at a rate corresponding to the rate of addition of the reactants. In Example 1, tube 6 is maintained at 150 DEG C., and tube 7 at 140 DEG C. Benzene vapour under pressure is introduced through inlet 1. In Example 4, liquid benzene is pumped into inlet 1, and then vaporizes in the reaction tube.
