Abstract

[Also in Division G4] A circuit for controlling both a forging press and a forging press manipulator is characterized in that completion of an operation by one of the units initiates an operation of the other. The forging press is as described in Specification 874,908 and the forging press manipulator as in Specification 892,216, both of these Specifications being referred to. The control circuit is so designed that the press and the manipulator operate alternately with the minimum of delay between successive operations. This object is rendered difficult by the fact that while the manipulator responds to a signal initiating a rotational movement relatively rapidly, its inertia causes it to respond to a signal initiating a translational movement relatively slowly. This difference in response times is compensated for by actually producing a translation initiation signal before the press has completed its operation. The mode of operation of the manipulator is specified by a switch MSS having positions LON for longitudinal displacements, ROT for rotational displacements and HEL for helical displacements, i.e. combined rotation and translation. In the longitudinal displacement LON a relay position of the switch prepares a circuit for a relay P which when energized via a contact U3 initiates such a displacement in the manipulator. The contact U3 is so arranged that it closes its right-hand contact just as the press begins its downward stroke and thus the manipulator receives its initiation signal suitably in advance of when it is desired that the translation shall take place. For rotation a relay T<SP>1</SP> is energized via a contact S3 and the left-hand contact U3 which closes when the press starts its upward stroke and this causes the release of a normally-energized slow-torelease relay ID whose contact ID1 initiates a rotation. While the manipulator is in operation one of contacts 431, 441, &c. is opened and thus prevents operation of the press.
