[Also in Divisions B1 and F2] A valve for sampling liquids comprises two mutually movable interengaging parts 1, 2 (Fig. 1), one of which (2) has two input ports A 1 , B 1 (Fig. 2), and two output ports A 2 , B 2 , a fixed volume being connected between each input port and an output port, and the other of which (1) has three input ports X 1 , Y 1 , Z 1 , and three output ports X 2 , Y 2 , Z 2 , two of the three pairs of input and output ports being connectable to a single stream or separate streams of fluid to be sampled and the third pair being connectable to a stream of eluting fluid, the ports being located and the two parts 1, 2 of the valve being movable so that a sample fluid and eluting fluid flow alternately through each fixed volume. Fig. 1 illustrates a preferred construction in which ports Z 1 , Z 2 and A 1 , A 2 are formed in co-operating upper and lower valve members 1 and 2, each consisting of a low-friction plastic portion 3, 4 contained in a bronze housing. A spindle 5 attached to the lower housing passes through the upper valve member to a cup 7 containing a spring 8 bearing upon a thrust plate 8a. A plate 9 is screwed to the upper valve member 1. The valve may be solenoid-operated through arms 10. The faces 3, 4 of the valve are shown respectively in Figs. 2 and 3. Port A 1 is connected to A 2 and port B 1 to B 2 through fixed volumes for metering; this arrangement makes it possible to fill one metering volume by passing a stream of the sample therethrough while discharging a metered sample into another fluid stream.
