Abstract
947,229. Laminates. DOW CHEMICAL CO. Aug. 3, 1961, No. 28307/61. Heading B5N. Laminated products, particularly panels, comprising a non-metallic non-thermoplastic substrate, e.g. of plywood, particle board, chip board, gypsum board, asbestos-cement, or fibrous asbestos, and a facing layer of flexible porous material embedded in a fused coating of thermoplastic polymeric material, are made by wetting the porous material with a solution of a coagulant in water or a solvent miscible with water but is a non solvent for the polymer or the porous material, coating both sides thereof with an aqueous latex of the thermoplastic material, drying and hot-pressing it to the substrate in a platen press or calender at a temperature sufficient to fuse the thermoplastic material. The porous material is preferably printed or other paper, e.g. wall paper, but may be of woven or unwoven natural or synthetic or man made fibres, burlap, or fabrics of nylon, acrylic fibres, or cellulose acetate or rayon being mentioned, or of decorative wood veneer. Thermoplastic materials usable, of which a large number of examples are given, include polyvinyl chloride, copolymers of vinyl or vinylidene chloride with other vinyl, acrylic or methacrylic monomers, polymers and copolymers of alkyl and cycloalkyl acrylates and methacrylates, polymers and copolymers of styrene and substituted styrene or copolymers of any of the above monomers with each other or with acrylonitrile, copolymers of conjugated diolefins such as butadiene with acrylonitrile, styrene or other mono ethylenically unsaturated monomers, polyamides, polytetrafluoroethylene or polychlorotrifluoroethylene. Latices of these materials may include thickeners, stabilizers, pigments, dyes, and fillers, such as chalk or silica which may produce a mat surface. Coagulants usable include polyvalent metallic salts, such as magnesium or calcium chloride or aluminium sulphate, and organic solvents such as ketones. The products may be given a slight curvature during pressing.
