A vehicle brake tester comprises a pair of coupled rollers 2, 3 (Fig. 2) one driven directly by a worm gear reduction box 8 suspended on a shaft 7 connected to a driven roller 3, a motor 10 secured to the gearbox and extending radially therefrom, with respect to the axis of the shaft, a drive connection between the reduction box 8 and motor 10, a torque arm 12 fixed to projecting from the gear box assembly and means for transmitting amplified movement of the torque arm to a scale 19 (Fig. 1). The torque arm 12 is connected by a link 13 to a radial arm 14 on spindle 15. A second radial arm 17 on the spindle is connected by a chain or cable 18 to a spring scale 19. With the vehicle supported on four such testers and the motor running, the brakes are applied and the resistance of the rollers 2, 3 to rotation is transmitted to shaft 7 so that the motor and gearbox tend to travel round the shaft 7. This movement is amplified by arms 12,14,17 and resisted by spring scale 19 which thereby measures the torque developed. The torque arm 12 maybe connected to the scale hydraulically.
