In apparatus for determining the linear displacement of the controlled moving part of a machine tool in coarse and fine components wherein the coarse dimensions are obtained by stepdown gearing OSH, the fine dimension is obtained from a transducer comprising an outer member 5 coupled to the driving pinion 2, and an inner member 6, the two members having an equal number of magnetic teeth, and the reluctance of the magnetic path being used to produce an error signal which energizes servomotor SM to drive the inner member 6 to maintain the reluctance at its minimum value, simultaneously driving the five digits of an indicator OP. The magnetic reluctance is determined by the inductance of coils wound on member 6 and connected as a differential transformer or in an A.C. bridge.
