A load supporting apparatus, for example for high temperature piping, comprises a housing 25 and rail means carried by the housing and defining a path of predetermined configuration, a carriage movable along the path defined by the rail means and including a frame 43 and a pair of spaced rollers coupled to the frame and rotatable relative to the frame about substantially parallel axes, each roller including a pair of spaced outer parts that engage the rail means and a central part 47 intermediate and coaxial with the outer parts, the latter and the central parts forming an annular groove, and a load-carrying unit 51 mounted on the carriage and movable therewith along the path, the unit being adapted to be connected to the load and including a member that projects into the annular groove and bears against the central part of each roller, the member being movable relative to the carriage. As shown, the housing 25 includes channel members 26 the lower flanges 29 of which mount bars 41 constituting rails for the carriage. The unit 51 is mounted on the rollers and has a stem 54 provided with an indicator element 58 which co-operates with a graduated scale 36 secured to the underside of one of the flanges 29; the unit carries guide rollers 60 and 61 respectively registering with the top and bottom slots 30, 31 in the housing, and the opening 62 in the stem 54 is used for the direct connection to the pipeline, or a spring support device. The carriage and unit 51 are adapted to be preset at " zero position " of the graduated indicator scale by a screw 65 extending through a member 40 secured to the housing 25, an arm 63 fixed to the carriage, and a screwed opening 57 in an extension 56 of the unit 51, the screw being removed at the time of installation of the apparatus when the parts of the apparatus are in the relative positions shown in Fig. 3 so that the carriage and unit 51 are free to move along the rectilinear path defined by the rails 41 in response to corresponding movement of the pipeline. End plates 33, 34 limit travel of the loadcarrying unit in opposite directions. In modifications, (a) the housing 25 is supported on a floor and the unit 51 has an upwardly projecting part to support an overhead load instead of a suspended load, and (b) the housing 85, Fig. 10, is pivotable about a pin 90 and a second carriage is mounted for movement along an arcuate bar 95, the unit 51 being then simultaneously movable in an arcuate path and a rectilinear path.
