[Also in Division F2] A mechanical garage consists of a central vertical latchway 16 flanked by superimposed facing pairs 12, 14 of parking stalls, each stall having an associated vehicle-carrying platform 22 connected thereto by an individual set of chains 40 to 43 by which it may be hauled up the hatchway 16 and directly into the stall. Within each stall the chains run in guides which prevent their flexing so that they may be used to push the platform out, assisted if desired by slightly sloping the stalls downwardly toward the central hatchway. Within the hatchway at each floor are a pair of tiltable chain guides 94 whose orientations are varied according to whether a left-hand stall 12 or right-hand stall 14 is being loaded or unloaded. Garage lifts.-The set of chains attached to each platform are connected (see Fig. 12) two to each longitudinal side of the platform 22 and pass over guide pulleys 71 to 74, Fig. 5, and thence with the horizontal guideways of the associated stall, in which the chains pass over individual sprockets on a common drive shaft 60, Fig. 1, to terminate at 80 in a spare-chain housing chamber 59. Conveyers.-In the horizontal movement between the shaft 16 and a parking stall 12, Fig. 1, the leftward parking movement is effected by a direct pull on the chains and the rightward de-parking movement by reverse drive of the chains, the guides 82 and 83, Fig. 5, in which they ran so closely embracing them that they function as pushing elements. These guides are arranged as shown in Fig. 4 just above the support rails 92 for the platform wheels 46, 47. Storage systems.-The garage of Fig. 1 consists of a plurality of separately constructed superimposed units each comprising a pair of facing stalls 12, 14 and an intervening hatchway section 16. Each stall is equipped with its own platform and associated drive means and each latchway section with the appropriate guide means. In use one of the platforms of the system is lowered to an entrance at the bottom of the hatchway and when loaded is returned to its stall. As the platform enters a stall 12, its trailing pair of wheels strike the lever 120 of the left-hand side, Fig. 5, to pivot a bridging member 88 into a position corresponding to that shown on the right-hand side of the Figure. At the same time the leading pair of wheels operates a lever which tilts the guide section 94 into the position appropriate to the use of the opposite stall 14. Thus when one stall is loaded the guide 94 is set for the use of the opposite stall and when both the platforms at a given storey are in their stalls, the associated bridge members 88 are both clear of the vertical chain guides 67, 69 so that the other storeys are all accessible.
