Abstract

The invention comprises partial esters of a polyhydric alcohol containing at least 3 hydroxyl groups and a mixture of a -alkylalkane and/or a , a - dialkylalkane monocarboxylic acids whose carboxyl groups are directly attached to a tertiary or quaternary carbon atom, the acids having been obtained by reaction of carbon monoxide and water with mono-olefins having from 8 to 18 carbon atoms in their molecule. The esters may be prepared by reacting a polyhydroxy compound or a precursor thereof such as an epoxy compound with a monocarboxylic acid of the above type or a precursor thereof such as the anhydride or acid halide of the acid. They may also be prepared by reaction of the monocarboxylic acid or a salt thereof with a halogen-substituted epoxy compound such as epichlorohydrin. Preferred alcohols are glycerol, trimethylol propane and pentaerythritol, specified precursors being glycidol or a resinous reaction product of diphenylol propane and epichlorohydrin. The preparation of the mixture of monocarboxylic acids is preferably carried out under the influence of acid catalysts such as phosphoric acid, sulphuric acid or a complex of phosphoric acid with boron trifluoride. Examples describe the preparation of partial esters by reaction of a monocarboxylic acid mixture of an equivalent weight of 192 with (1) trimethylolpropane, (2) glycerol in the presence of zinc powder, and (3) glycidol in the presence of tetramethylammonium bromide. The esters may be used in the preparation of alkyd resins (see Division C3). Specification 942,465 is referred to.ALSO:Alkyl resins as claimed in Specification 942,669 may be prepared by reaction of at least one polylaric carboxylic acid or an anhydride thereof with one or more partial esters, as defined below, at least one of which having more than one free hydroxyl group per molecule. The partial esters are defined as partial esters of a polyhydric alcohol containing at least 3 hydroxyl groups and a mixture of a -alkylalkane and/or a ,a -dialkylalkane monocarboxylic acids whose carboxyl groups are directly attached to a tertiary or quaternary carbon atom, the acids having been obtained by reaction of carbon monoxide and water with mono-olefins having from 8 to 18 carbon atoms in their molecule (see Division C2). Many dicarboxylic acids and acid anhydrides suitable for preparing the alkyd resins are specified. Examples describe the preparation of resins from (1) phthalic anhydride and a partial ester of trimethylolpropane with a monocarboxylic acid mixture, (2) phthalic anhydride and a partial ester of glycerol with a monocarboxylic acid mixture, and (3) phthalic anhydride and glycerol with a partial ester obtained from glycidol and a monocarboxylic acid mixture.
