Abstract

945,986. Welding by fusion. PRESSED STEEL CO. Ltd. Nov. 13, 1962 [Nov. 29, 1961], No. 42634/61. Heading B3R. Workpieces to be arc welded are positioned with their contiguous edges abutting on a backing bar, and a thin metal strip is interposed between the workpieces and the backing bar. The strip which becomes welded to the workpieces is buffed down to leave a smooth joint. The backing bar forms part of a jig assembly and has a shallow longitudinal channel in which a steel strip of thickness 0.001 . . . 0.015 inch is secured by removable spring fingers, magnetically or by use of an adhesive. The workpieces are then clamped in position and are welded by carbon dioxide shielded arc welding. Carbon dioxide under pressure may also be supplied through holes in the backing bar to press the strip against the workpieces. The strip may be coated with flux, aluminium or zinc.
