Abstract
945,836. Automatic couplings for railway vehicles. ABC COUPLER & ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. March 16, 1960 [April 22, 1959], No. 13721/59. Heading B7T. A railway vehicle automatic coupler comprises a pocket 4 and a projection 5, a hook 3 pivoted at 6, and a transversely slidable bar 11 which may be operated to swing the hook 3. The hook has a projection 8 engaging with lost motion in a slot 10 in the bar 11, a projection 9 which engages in the hook closed position with the rear surface of a vertically movable locking piece 12, and a projection 28 which engages with the body portion of the head 1 in the locked position. To uncouple from the Fig. 5 position, the bar 11 is moved to the left against the spring 17, thus raising the piece 12 up the incline 15 until the slot 16 in the piece 12 is at the same level as the projection 9. Further movement of the bar then causes the projection 8 to engage the right hand end of the slot 10 and swing the hook 3 to the open position. In the open position however the projection 9 remains within the slot 16 and holds the piece 12 raised. The coupler is provided with an anti-creep gravity operated latch 18, Fig. 3, engaging the piece 12 in the locked position, and a plunger 23 which is pushed back on coupling operates a latch 26 to disengage a pivoted projection 27 retaining the bar 11 in hook open position, the bar then being shot by the spring 17 to swing the hook into the engaged position.
