Abstract

A process for separating saturated fatty acids from unsaturated fatty acids, or from hydrocarbons, soaps, metal residues or other impurities, as well as for separating saturated fatty alcohols from unsaturated fatty alcohols, comprises dissolving the mixture to be treated in a nitroparaffin at a temperature of 50 DEG C. or higher, cooling the solution while stirring to a temperature of from 12 DEG to 16 DEG C., and thereafter filtering off the crystallised saturated materials using at least approximately one part nitroparaffin per part of the mixture to be treated. Nitroparaffins having from one to four carbon atoms are preferred, for example, 1-nitropropane, and 2-nitropropane. The process is particularly applied to the separation of stearic, palmitic, and myristic acids from oleic, linoleic, linolenic acids, and from mixtures containing hydrocarbons; the purification of crude stearic acid; and the separation of saturated and unsaturated fatty alcohols obtained from sperm oil.ALSO:A process for separating the glycerides of saturated fatty acids from the glycerides of unsaturated fatty acids, or from hydrocarbons, soaps, metal residues or other impurities, comprises dissolving the mixture to be treated in a nitroparaffin at a temperature of 50 DEG C. or higher, cooling the solution while stirring to a temperature of from 12 DEG to 16 DEG C., and thereafter filtering off the crystallized saturated materials using at least approximately one part nitroparaffin per part of the mixture to be treated. Nitroparaffins having from one to four carbon atoms are preferred, for example, 1-nitropropane and 2-nitropropane. The process is particularly applied to the separation of saturated and unsaturated glycerides in animal grease, or inedible hog grease.
