Abstract

945,679. Grinding; lathes. A. G. F. WALLGREN. April 27, 1960 [April 29, 1959], No. 14729/60. Headings B3B, B3D and B3T. [Also in Division F2] A machine for working the surfaces of revolution of large crank-shafts 20 or the like comprises a tool 30, Fig. 1, carried by an annular carrier 14, 16 rotatably mounted in an annular frame 10, 12, one of the carrier and frame having annular sliding surfaces 34, 36, Figs. 2, 3 and 4, engaged by a number of tiltable bearing blocks 38, 40 on the other, and means for supplying lubricant to the sliding surfaces. The frame and carrier may comprise undivided ring elements or be split to enable assembly about the crank-shaft. The crank-shaft is held stationary and the tool 30, which may be a grinding wheel or lathe tool, is mounted on the carrier which is rotatably-driven in the frame by a gear 32, the frame being slidable on a base 18. The carrier is supported radially by the blocks 38, which engage the surface 34 on the carrier, and is supported axially by the blocks 40 which engage the surfaces 36 on the carrier. The blocks 38 are radially adjustable by, and tiltable about, screws 44 in sleeves 42 which are located in the frame and are formed with projections 45 on each side of studs 46 in the blocks, the projections acting to prevent circumferential movement of the blocks relative to the frame. Studs 74 pass through holes in the blocks and springs 76 resiliently urge the blocks into engagement with the surface 34. The blocks may be moved away from the surface 34 by links, cams, hydraulic or other means as the joints in the carrier pass the blocks. Passages 66, 68 connect a supply of lubricant to grooves 64 in the bearing surfaces of the blocks, the grooves also being connected to outlet passages. The blocks 40 are mounted on supports 80 and resiliently urged against the surfaces 36 by springs in a similar manner to the blocks 38. The blocks 40 are tiltable about, and axially adjustable by, studs 82 movable by tapered plugs 86 in the supports and frame. Lubricant is supplied to grooves 108 in the blocks through passages in the frame and passages 107 in the blocks and passes to an outlet through passages 111, 112. Tubes between the frame and blocks enable the lubricant to pass therebetween without preventing tilting of the blocks. Sealing gaps 166, 168, 172, Fig. 7, are formed between the frame and carrier. Air is supplied to spaces 138, 130 to prevent oil from the surfaces passing through the gaps and coolant supplied through a conduit 162 to a valve chamber 160 connected by valves 156 to a channel 142 leading to a nozzle passing to the surfaces 34, 36. The valve chamber is pressed by a spring 148 towards a bearing surface 152 in which are a number of the valves 156 arranged to open when subjected to the pressure of the coolant. A power cable 128 is connected by brushes and slip-rings 134 to the motor 28 driving the tool 30. Specification 864,496 is referred to.
