Abstract

SO2 and O2 are converted to SO3 using a vanadium-containing catalyst supported on a silicate carrier material prepared by applying a mixture of V2O5 or a precursor therefor with an oxide of a metal from Group IVA and VIA of the Periodic System or heterepolyacid containing such an oxide in combined form and also a mixture of K2S2O7 with the pyrosulphates or precursors therefor or sulphates of other metals of Group I, to a silicic acid which has been obtained by precipitation of an alkali silicate solution with dilute acid and then calcined at temperatures of 200-700 DEG C., preferably 300-500 DEG C., the molar ratio of V2O5 to the oxide of Group IVA and VIA being 4 : 1 to 1 : 3, the molar ratio of K2S2O7 to the pyrosulphates or sulphates of metals of Group I being 8 : 1 to 1 : 2 and the weight ratio of the metal oxide mixture to the pyrosulphate and sulphate mixture being 0.15-0.5. Examples are given.ALSO:A vanadium-containing catalyst supported on a silicate carrier material for the oxidation of sulphur dioxide to sulphur trioxide with oxygen or oxygen-containing gases is prepared by applying a mixture of V2O5 or a precursor therefor with an oxide of a metal from Group IVa and VIa of the Periodic System or heteropolyacid containing such an oxide in combined form and also a mixture of potassium pyrosulphate with the pyrosulphates or precursors therefor or sulphates of other metals of Group Ia or Ib, to a silicic acid which has been obtained by precipitation of an alkali silicate solution with dilute acid and then calcined at temperatures of 200-700 DEG C., preferably 300-500 DEG C., the molar ratio of vanadium pentoxide to the oxide of a metal of Group IVa and VIa being 4 : 1 to 1 : 3, the molar ratio of potassium pyrosulphate to the pyrosulphates or sulphates of metals of Group Ia and Ib being 8 : 1 to 1 : 2 and the weight ratio of the metal oxide mixture to the pyrosulphate and sulphate mixtures being 0,15-0,5. Additionally the catalyst may contain cerium oxide. Examples are given in which heteropolyacid elements present include B, Al, Si and P and mention is made of Ag and Rb salts.
