Abstract
1,150,953. Sulphur trioxide. PULLMAN Inc. 29 July, 1966, No. 34290/66. Heading C1A. Sulphur trioxide is prepared from a mixture, comprising sulphur dioxide and oxygen, by passing the mixture in contact with a first oxidation catalyst at a temperature above its ignition point (above 750‹ F.) to convert a proportion of the sulphur dioxide to sulphur trioxide ; cooling (after the exothermic reaction) to a temperature below the ignition point of the first catalyst but above that of a second oxidation catalyst of lower ignition point; and passing the mixture in contact with the second oxidation catalyst at said temperature, to convert a further proportion of sulphur dioxide to sulphur trioxide. First oxidation catalysts may be platinum on a carrier such as asbestos, manganese sulphate, silica or silica and alumina; or platinum group metals, or vanadium pentoxide. Second oxidation catalysts may be produced by impregnating the first oxidation catalysts with between 0À5 and 3% by weight of a suitable metal oxide such as P 2 O 5 or MoO 3 .
