Abstract

1397044 Contact process METALLGESELLSCHAFT AG 2 March 1973 [21 March 1972] 10366/73 Heading C1A In the production of SO 3 from a stream of gas containing a high percentage of SO 2 by the contact process, part of the partly reacted gas stream being mixed with the incoming gas and cooling between trays or stages of the contact plant, part of the partly reacted gas stream is passed through an absorber for absorbing sulphur trioxide before being mixed with the incoming gas, the rate at which SO 3 is absorbed in the absorber being increased as the loss of catalyst activity increases so that rate of conversion of SO 2 into SO 3 remains constant. Preferably the whole of the partly converted gas stream is passed through the absorber. As shown a contact plant is provided with four catalyst trays 1a to 1d with interstage coolers 2a to 2e between the trays. A high SO 2 content stream A passes in succession through the contact trays and coolers and is cooled after leaving the contact stage at 3, producing a cooled product stream B. A partial stream C is supplied to the absorber 4 where SO 3 is removed at a controlled rate. The resultant stream D is mixed at 5 with the incoming SO 2 stream. Part F of stream C may by-pass the absorber 4 and pass directly to mixer 5.
