Abstract

1463174 Formaldehyde SOC ITALIANA RESINE SIR SpA 27 Nov 1974 [28 Nov 1973] 51412/74 Heading C2C A process for producing formaldehyde by continuously contacting a gaseous feed containing methanol and air with a metal oxide catalyst at elevated temperature is characterized in that the reaction is initially carried out in an isothermal stage and is completed in an adiabatic stage by: (a) flowing the said gaseous feed through a first stationary bed of the catalyst at elevated temperature while subtracting reaction heat from the bed thereby to maintain the latter under isothermal conditions such that the peak value of the temperature in the bed does not exceed 370‹ C. and the conversion of methanol does not exceed 85%; (b) conveying the effluent gaseous flow from said first bed through a second stationary bed of the catalyst without subtracting reaction heat from the latter bed, thereby to operate the said second bed under substantially adiabatic conditions, while keeping the linear velocity of the flow through the second bed lower than the linear velocity of the flow through the first bed by an extent such that the temperature in the second bed does not exceed 370‹ C. The first bed may be contained in a plurality of parallel tubes surrounded by a heat exchange medium. Waste gas may be mixed with the gaseous feed.
