944,971. Dealkylating alkyl aromatics. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. July 26, 1962 [July 28; 1961], No. 28788/62. Heading C5E. The dealkylation of alkyl aromatics is effected in the presence of hydrogen-containing gas derived from a catalytic reforming process which has been at least partially freed of hydrocarbons by at least one absorptive treatment of which the last (or only) treatment is effected with a liquid containing at least 90% wt. of C6+ hydrocarbons and not more than 5% wt. of C2-C4 hydrocarbons. The dealkylation is effected conventionally with or without a catalyst. The treatment of all or part of the reforming tail gas preferably results in a gas containing not more than 2% mol. of C2+ hydrocarbons and the total gas fed to the process (fresh and recycle) contains 40-50% mol. methane. Preferred absorption liquids are aromatic hydrocarbons, e.g. all or a fraction of a reforming reaction feed or product or a feed to or product of a dealkylation process.
