Abstract

944,955. Moulding resin - fibre articles. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. April 5, 1961 [April 12, 1960], No. 13029/60. Heading B5A. A method of producing a reinforced plastics structure, e.g. a radome, comprises applying a layer 12 of fibrous reinforcing material, e.g. glass cloth, to a mould 11, covering the layer with a flexible, e.g. rubber, moulding bag 13, reducing the pressure in the space between the mould and the bag, admitting a supply of liquid thermosetting, e.g. polyester or epoxy resin, to fill said space, whilst maintaining the reduced pressure, and curing the resin to form the structure. In operation, the mould 11 is coated with a release agent, and if desired, a gel coat. The mould is then covered by a suitable number of layers of glass cloth and the moulding bag 13 is fitted over the mould and sealed to the base 14. The inside of the bag 13 may be coated with a release agent, or alternatively a layer of polyvinyl acetate may be applied to the glass cloth 12 before covering it with the bag 13. A valve 20 is then opened to admit liquid thermosetting resin which has been mixed with catalysts, accelerators, pigments or fillers, from a chamber 21 to the moulding space. Where a highly viscous resin is used a squeegee or roller may be applied to the outside of the bag 13 to assist in the impregnation of the glass cloth. After filling of the mould space the resin is allowed to cure, preferably with the vacuum still applied.
