Abstract

903,734. Moulding hollow articles. KEPKA, A., and KEPKA, S. Oct. 6, 1958 [Oct. 5, 1957; April 9, 1958], No. 31825/58. Class 87(2). Fibre-resin articles are moulded in a closed mould 1a 2a by removing air from the mould through a pipe 7, and then pressing the fibre and resin by an inflatable bag 3a which is supplied with compressed air through a pipe 9. The resin may be fed to the mould, if necessary under pressure, before, during or after the vacuum operation. The fibrous material may be cured or uncured resin reinforced fibrous mats, which may abut as at 6 against the sides of the mould. In a modification, Fig. 6, preformed resin impregnated mats 45, 46 are placed in a mould cavity 23 between mould parts 20, 21, 22, resin 49 is poured into a mould cavity and the mould tightly sealed by supplying compressed air to an inflatable member 40. Compressed air is also supplied through a pipe 32 to inflatable members 31 to seal channels 24. Vacuum is then applied to pipes 29, 30 to exhaust the air from the mould. The inflatable members 28 are supplied with compressed air to completely seal the mould, and the member 47 is inflated to press the fibre and resin against the mould. Subsequently air is exhausted from the members 38<SP>1</SP>, to allow excess resin to pass from the mould cavity to the channels 24 and out through pipes 42. In a modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), an apparatus similar to that shown in Fig. 6 is located within a closed autoclave. In a further modification, Fig. 8, the moulded article may be formed with a foamed filling by clamping preformed resin sheets 62 between mould parts 60, 61 enclosing foamable or partly foamed material P, placing resin in the mould cavity 66, sucking air from the mould cavity through a pipe 67, and supplying cold or hot air and simultaneously or successively hot air or water through the pipe 65 to foam the material P. Alternatively, the material may be foamed by a chemical agent in which case the pipe 65 is dispensed with. The inner walls of the sheets 62 may be coated with an adhesive. In a further modification, Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown), an inflatable member may be provided within the foamed material to form a hollow in it.
