Abstract

944,846. Ventilators; lamps combined with ventilating means. EMERSON ELECTRIC MANUFACTURING CO. Aug. 11, 1960, No. 27892/60. Headings F4R and F4V. In a combined ventilating and lighting unit a member having a plurality of removable panels formed therein divides an upper air enclosure from a lower space in which lights are mounted so that the unit may be used as a light fixture alone or may in addition be used to provide a number of differing nodes of air flow depending on which of said panels are removed. As shown in Fig. 2, the apparatus comprises a body 12 open at its lower portion and having its upper edges bent over to define channels 19 for electrical wiring, and an air space 32 which is surmounted by a member 25 having an aperture connecting said air space with a conduit 26 or with the plenum space above a ceiling. A V-shaped member 45 having perforations 52 is mounted beneath the space 32 and is separated therefrom by a member 33. As shown in Fig. 7, this member has " knockout " panels 39, 39a in its centre panel 37 and further such panels 42 in its divergent side panels 36. The walls of the body 12 and those of the V-shaped member 45 define two parabolic reflecting compartments in which are mounted lights L, the compartments being provided with transverse partitions. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 only the panels 39 and 39a have been removed to provide communication between the air space 32 and the V-shaped member 45. This type of unit may be used to supply cold air to a room, flow of cold air over the lights L being avoided, and may be used in combination with a unit having all of the panels removed and having a hot air supply. In the modification of Fig. 9, all of the panels are removed and pivoted flap valves 71, 72 are provided, the valves being arranged for movement between one limiting position in which they close the apertures formed by the removal of the panels 42 and a second limiting position in which they isolate the member 45 from the air space 32. A perforated curved baffle 58 within the member 45 is provided to distribute the air entering the latter along its length. The unit may be used as an air extractor when its air supply is cut-off.
