Abstract
High molecular weight polypropylene is produced using a catalyst comprising a trialkyl aluminium compound in which the alkyl group contains 1 to 8 carbon atoms and titanium di- or tri-chloride having propylene absorbed thereon. The polymerization is carried out at a temperature of 50 to 200 DEG C. and a propylene pressure of 2 to 70 atmospheres. The catalyst is formed by grinding the titanium chloride at room temperature in a propylene atmosphere, preferably at superatmospheric pressure e.g. up to 10 atmospheres until the titanium chloride has absorbed, for example, at least 0.5% of its weight of propylene, and then mixing this ground chloride with the trialkyl aluminium compound. In general the amount of catalyst used is 0.05 to 0.003 grams of total catalyst per gram of propylene to be polymerized. The weight ratio of the titanium chloride with propylene absorbed thereon to the trialkyl aluminium compound may be in the range 5:1 to 1:10. Where the polymerization is performed at a temperature at which the polymer remains in solution, the metallic catalyst can be removed by filtration, if desired after adding a chelating agent. In the examples the trialkyl aluminium compound used is triisobutyl aluminium.
