Abstract

The invention comprises O,S-dialkoxy-carbonylthiamines of formula: <FORM:0944641/C2/1> where R and R1 are alkyl radicals. The compounds may be prepared (a) by reacting a salt of a thiol thiamine of formula: <FORM:0944641/C2/2> where Met. is an alkali metal, with at least 2 molar amounts of an alkyl halogenocarbonate, an alkyl nitrophenyloxycarbonate, an alkyl thiocyanatocarbonate or an alkoxycarbonyltrithiophosphonic acid bis-(alkylcarbonic acid) anhydride; (b) by reacting an S-alkoxycarbonyl thiamine of formula: <FORM:0944641/C2/3> with one of the reagents mentioned in (a) above: or (c) by reacting O,S-dihalogeno-carbonylthiamine of formula: <FORM:0944641/C2/4> where X is a halogen atom, with an alkanol: the S-alkoxycarbonyl thiamine used in method (b) may be obtained by reacting a salt of thiol thiamine (see above) with 1 molar amount of one of the reagents mentioned in (a) above, and the O,S-dihalogenocarbonyl-thiamine of method (c) may be obtained by reacting the salt of thiolthiamine with phosgene or other carbonyl halide. Examples are given. The compounds of the invention, which have vitamin B1 activity, may be incorporated in tablets together with carriers e.g. lactose, mannitol, starch, talc and magnesium stearate; other ingredients e.g. riboflavin, pyridoxin, folic acid, biotin, inositol and mineral salts, may be included.
