Abstract
Olefines are oxidised to carbonyl compounds containing the same number of carbon atoms by contacting an olefine-containing gas under non-basic conditions in the presence of water with a salt of a noble metal of Group VIII of the Periodic Table and a salt of a metal capable of existing in more than one valency state, the oxidation being effected under two different sets of reaction conditions so that most of the olefine is oxidised in a first stage, the carbonyl compounds removed and the remaining effluent then being treated under more severe reaction conditions so that substantially the whole of the residual olefine is oxidised. If desired the effluent gas from the first stage may be washed to remove carbon dioxide. Oxygen may be mixed with the olefines before oxidation so that the metal salts which have been reduced may be regenerated in situ. Suitable noble metals are ruthenium, rhodium, iridium, platinum and especially palladium. The metals capable of existing in more than one valency state are, for example, mercury, cerium, thallium, tin, lead, titanium, vanadium, antimony, chromium, molybdenum, manium, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel and, preferably, copper. Preferred catalysts contain palladium and copper compounds and also one or more compounds of iron, chromium, manganese and cerium. The preferred anions are chloride ions or chlorate, perchlorate or nitrate ions or mixtures of these with sulphate or acetate ions. In the second stage the temperature and/or the pressure and/or the catalyst concentration is higher than that in the first stage. In the examples ethylene is oxidised to acetaldehyde. Specifications 898,790, 900,829, 922,694, 938,831, 938,832, 938,833, 938,834 and 938,835 are referred to.
