Abstract

944,305. Joint-making packing; pipe joints. HAMILTON KENT MANUFACTURING CO. May 15, 1961, No.17597/61. Headings F2B and F2G. A rubber &c. 0-ring 5 for use between the telescoped ends of two pipes 11, 13 has at least three spaced surface knife-like slits A, B, C and D extending throughout its length. The slits may be radial, inverted T-shaped or other form and the ring may have a central opening therein or, as shown in Fig. 5, an opening 54, 55 or 56 may be provided between adjacent slits 52, 53, 54. In operation, the ring 5 is compressed between opposed cylindrical surfaces of the pipe ends 12, 14, Fig. 1, the slits or portions thereof, if the ring is twisted, contacting the pipes having their sides pressed together whilst the sides of the remaining slits or portions thereof which are exposed to the fluid pressure in the pipes or to atmosphere are spread apart.
