Abstract
944,259. Sewing. W. CANNING & CO. Ltd. Sept. 6, 1962 [Sept. 12, 1961 ], No. 32626/61. Heading D1G. Apparatus for performing circular sewing comprises a sewing machine, a slide movable radially relative to'the axis of the sewing machine needle, a workpiece support rotatably mounted on the slide, a rack bar on the slide, biasing means urging the slide in one direction, a first detent co-operating with the rack bar to retain the slide from movement under the influence of the biasing means, a second detent co-operating with the rack bar, power operable means for imparting movement to the second detent to impart a predetermined increment of movement to the slide against the action of the biasing means, and control means operable after the completion of each revolution of the workpiece to energize the power operable means. A workpiece is held on a disc-like support 6 rotatably mounted on a slide 3 biased by weights or spring means radially away from the needle 2 of a sewing machine 1. The work support 6 is connected by 2 to 1 gearing 7 to a cam 8 adapted to close a micro-switch 9 twice per revolution thereof, switch 9 being thereby closed once for each revolution of the support 6. A rack bar 10 on slide 3 is engaged by a first detent 11 to prevent movement of the slide in the biasing direction. Slide 3 is also engaged by a second detent 12 mounted on a lever 14 coupled to the piston rod 15 of a pneumatic jack 16, admission of air to which is controlled by a solenoid valve 17. Closing of switch 9 energizes valve 17 to effect movement of slide 3 against the biasing means by the cooperation of detent 12 and rack 10. The stroke of piston 15 may be adjusted by stop means. A lever 13 is adapted to shift a release piece 13a to engage the latter with pins 11a and 12a on the detents 11 and 12 respectively, whereby the detents are disengaged from the rack bar. A micro-switch, operable by the slide or rack bar in a limit position nearest the needle, is adapted to disengage a clutch driving the sewing machine.
