Abstract

Symmetrical aliphatic carboxylic acid anhydrides and/or symmetrical ketones are obtained by passing an aliphatic carboxylic acid in the gaseous state, alone or in admixture with an inert carrier gas, through a fluidised bed consisting of granulated catalyst material for promoting dehydration and decarboxylation heated to 250-800 DEG C. at a rate sufficient to effect fluidisation of the catalyst, and condensing the reaction products from the effluent gases by cooling. The contact time may be 0.1 to 5 seconds. Catalysts include oxides, hydroxides and phosphates of elements of periods 2 or 3 of Groups II, III and IV and of periods 4 to 7 of Groups IIA, III, IV, VA, VIA, VIIA or VIII (Mendel<\>aeeff). In examples, dipropyl ketone is obtained from butyric acid, propionic anhydride or diethyl ketone from propionic acid, diisobutyl ketone from isovaleric acid, and cyclopentanone from adipic acid.
