943,565. Typewriters &c. PAVELLE Ltd. Oct. 29, 1962 [Oct. 30, 1961], No. 38779/61. Heading B6F. A marking device for use in a photographic printing machine to mark the back of a roll of printing paper includes a first reciprocally mounted marking head 3, Fig. 1, comprising a plurality of printing wheels 6, 7, 8 with numerals 0 . . . 9 thereon to mark a reference number on the paper and a second and third reciprocally mounted marking head 4 and 5, respectively, having each an anvil 23 for impression of a mark on the paper, which mark is sensed by colour sensitive photo-electric cell for controlling of a cutting device for cutting of the roll transversely into individual prints. The marking head 3 is reciprocated for impression by a solenoid 16, Fig. 2, operating lever 18 connected to a carriage 15 on which the marking head 3 is mounted. Marking heads 4 and 5 are operated selectively depending on whether square or rectangular prints or processed. The marking head 3 is adapted to be set remotely to the required reference number by electrical pulses controlled by the operation of a rotary telephone dial by the machine operator, a bank of dials being associated with windings 9, 10, 11 connected through respective sets of contacts 12, 13 and 14 of the wheels 6, 7 and 8. In marking of the paper a two colour red/black ink ribbon is made use of so that the colour sensitive photocell will respond to the red marks only, which control the cutting device. The marking head 5 may be dispensed with if the marking head 4 is made adjustable with respect to the marking head 3.
