943,372. Milling; machine tool details; making cans. METAL CLOSURES GROUP Ltd. Sept. 11, 1962 [April 11, 1962], No. 14082/62. Headings B3A, B3B, B3C and B3T. [Also in Division B5] A machine for trimming a round, oval or rectangular can comprises a can holder, a saw to cut through the wall of the can at its mouth and an axially-movable cutter to trim the edge. The can of aluminium is initially formed by extrusion. A cam-shaft controls movements of a loading device 30, having an arm 36 and a shoot 35, a sawing unit 26 sliding on rods 41 and a milling unit 32, by way of push-rods and bell-crank linkage. The milling cutter 39, Fig. 6, has five blades 39a. Passing through the cutter is a stationary mandrel 49 to support the cam 100. The cans are held on an indexible turret, each can being clamped to a shaped metal or metal-filled resin support 54 by a twin-armed lever 53, Fig. 4. Each can is located by a stop 55 and the clamp carries a pivoted bar 56 carrying a work-engaging block 59 and a roller 58, the arm being normally urged by a spring 61 against a stop 60. The clamp is actuated by a fixed cam 63 contacting a plunger 62 engaging a stop 64. A finished can is ejected at an unloading station by air admitted through the hollow stop 55. The table is indexed to eight positions, every other position being an idle station to reduce wear and overshoot of the table.
