Abstract

943,327. Automatic current regulation. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. July 20,1962 [July 20, 1961], No. 28058/62. Heading G3R. [Also in Division H2] In a direct current stabilizer of the series transistor type, the emitter-collector path of the transistor is bridged by a resistor through which at least part of the load current flows should a fault occur, e.g. on short circuit, whereby the transistor is protected against overload. As shown, the current from a supply 1 to a load 6 is maintained constant in known manner by a circuit comprising a series transistor 5, an emitter resistor 2, a Zener diode 3 and a resistor 4. A resistor 7 shunts the emitter-collector path of the transistor 5; this resistor is so proportioned that it carries only a small part of the load current under normal operation, but the full load current under short circuit conditions, whereby the transistor 5 is protected. The resistor 7 may be of the ohmic, temperature-responsive, or voltageresponsive type.
