Abstract

1,123,076. Protective arrangements. AUTOMATIC TELEPHONE & ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 23 Feb., 1966 [31 Dec., 1964], No. 52937/64. Heading H2K. [Also in Division G3] A regulated power supply comprises a switching transistor TX21, connected in series between an unregulated supply source and a load, controlled in dependence upon output voltage variations by a circuit including a first differential amplifier TX22, TX27 which drives a second differential amplifier TX24, TX25 to control the duty cycle of a free running multivibrator TX23, TX26 the output from which is applied over transistors TX28, TX29 to control the switching period of transistor TX21. An overload protection circuit OCPC for the power supply comprises a series resistor R41 associated with a differential amplifier TX11, TX12 and a mono-stable circuit TX13, TX14 the latter providing an output pulse, having a duration determined by the value of a capacitor C11, when the current through the series resistor exceeds a predetermined value. This output pulse is applied over diode D13 to transistor TX22, whereby the series transistor TX21 is switched off, the action of the multivibrator TX23, TX26 being inhibited for the duration of the said pulse. At the end of the predetermined period set by the capacitor 11, the mono-stable circuit reverts to its other state, and transistor TX21 is switched on and immediately switched off again for said predetermined period if the overload persists, this cycle continuing until the overload condition no longer obtains. An overvoltage protective circuit OVPC for the power supply includes a Schmidt trigger circuit TX1, TX2 which, when the voltage across a resistor R10 reaches a certain level, produces a pulse on the gate electrode of thyristor TY causing the thyristor to fire, the resulting current then being sufficient to blow a fuse F1 so that the regulating circuit is isolated from the supply source. The protective circuit also includes switches S1, S2, an indicating lamp LP and a resistor R2 arranged so that the circuit may be checked to see that it is in order, without blowing the fuse. The circuits OCPC and OVPC may also be provided in regulators of the type including a series transistor having a variable impedance.
