Abstract

Trimethylolpropane distearate is prepared by esterifying trimethylolpropane with stearic acid in the presence of phosphoric acid as a catalyst. The solid ester (MP 36-39) may be powdered and used as a lubricant in polyvinyl chloride or other thermoplastic resin compositions.ALSO:A lubricant for thermoplastic resin compositions comprises a partial ester derived from (1) a polyhydric alcohol with more than 3 carbon atoms and at least three primary hydroxyl groups in the molecule and (2) a monocarboxylic acid derived from an animal or vegetable oil, fat or vegetable wax and with more than 7 carbon atoms in the molecule, said partial ester containing one free hydroxyl group in the molecule. Polystyrene, styrene-acrylonitrile and styrene-butadiene copolymers, polymethyl methacrylate, polyethylene and polypropylene and in particular polyvinyl chloride are specified and esters derived from pentaerythritol or preferably trimethylol propane with lauric, palmitic, oleic, ricinoleic and preferably stearic acids are mentioned. An example describes the use of trimethylol propane distearate as a lubricant in polyvinyl chloride compositions.
