Abstract

Polymers built up from (a) a heterocyclic nitrogen compound of the formula: <FORM:0943108/C3/1> (in which n is 2 or 3), e.g. N-vinyl-oxazolidone and N-vinyl-oxazinidone, or a ring substituted derivative thereof, and (b) a higher alkyl acrylate or methacrylate, e.g. octyl, decyl, lauryl, cetyl and stearyl acrylates and methacrylates, are used as additives to lubricants and hydraulic fluids (see Division C5). A third co-monomer may also be used to make the polymers, those mentioned being methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, acrylamide, methacrylamide, dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, styrene, vinyl acetate, a maleate ester, or a vinyl pyridine or pyrrolidone. In the example one of these polymers is formed under the influence of azodiisobutyro-dinitrile. Specification 807,016 is referred to.ALSO:A synthetic or mineral hydraulic or lubricating oil has added thereto a polymer which is built up from a heterocyclic nitrogen compound of the formula <FORM:0943108/C3/1> (in which n is 2 or 3) or a ring-substituted derivative thereof, and a higher alkyl, e.g. octyl, decyl, lauryl, cetyl, or stearyl, acrylate or methacrylate. The heterocyclic nitrogen compound may be substituted by alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or cycloalkyl groups, methyl being specified. Compounds specified are N-vinyl-oxazolidones and N-vinyl-oxazinidones. A further co-monomer may be used to build the polymer, those mentioned being methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, acrylamide, methacrylamide, dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, styrene, vinyl acetate, esters of maleic acid, vinyl pyridines and vinyl pyrrolidones. Optional additives specified are barium mineral oil sulphonates, barium alkyl phenol sulphides, and metal aryl dithiophosphates. Specification 807,016 is referred to.
