[Also in Group III] A composition comprises a major proportion of a lubricating oil and a minor proportion, preferably from 0.01 to 10 per cent by weight, based on the whole composition, of a copolymer of (1) a polymerizable heterocyclic nitrogen base compound with (2) a polymerizable unsaturated material free of heterocyclic nitrogen-containing radicals, the molar ratio of (1) to (2) being between 1 : 1 and 1: 4. Compound (1) may be a vinyl pyridine, quinoline, pyrrole, pyrrolidine, pyrroline, indole, imidazole, pyrroloindole, or pyrrolidone, or a ring-substituted derivative thereof, preferred compounds being 2-vinyl-, 3-vinyl-, 4-vinyl-, 2-methyl-5-vinyl-, 4-methyl- 2-vinyl-, 2-ethyl-5-vinyl- and 2-butyl-5-vinylpyridine, and (2) may be acrylic, methacrylic, ethacrylic, or alpha-phenyl acrylic acid or a methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl, isobutyl, amyl, octyl, nonyl, lauryl, cetyl, oleyl, stearyl or cyclohexyl ester thereof, acrylamide, alpha-methyl-,. alpha-ethyl- or lauryl-acrylamide, acrylonitrile, alpha-methyl-, alpha-ethyl- or alpha-propyl-acrylonitrile, 2-butyl 2-hexenenitrile, 2-propyl 2-pentene-nitrile, 2-chloroethyl- 2-butenenitrile, 2-ethyl 3-chloro 2-butenenitrile, 2-isopropyl 3-bromo 2-pentenenitrile, alphaisopropyl beta-cyclohexyl-acrylonitrile, vinyl or allyl acetate, propionate, butyrate, isobutyrate, valerate, laurate, stearate, benzoate or crotonate, vinyl or allyl methyl, isobutyl or phenyl ether or ketone, styrene, o-methyl, p-methyl, p-ethyl, 2,4-dimethyl, alpha-methyl p-methyl or alpha-methyl styrene, vinyl naphthalene or diphenyl, vinyl chloride or fluoride, vinylidene chloride or fluorochloride, maleic, fumaric, citraconic, itaconic, mesaconic, crotonic, aconitic or tricarballylic acid, or an ester, amide or nitrile thereof. Mixtures of heterocyclic nitrogen base compounds and/or the other polymerizable compounds may be used. The lubricating oil may be obtained from a paraffinic or naphthenic crude or mixtures thereof, which may be blended with fatty oils such as castor oil or lard oil, and/or with synthetic lubricating oils, such as polymerized olefins, copolymers of alkylene glycols and alkylene oxides, di-(2- ethyl hexyl) sebacate, dioctyl phthalate, trioctyl phosphate, polymeric tetrahydrofuran and polyalkyl silicone polymers. Synthetic lubricating oils may be used as the sole base lubricating oil or may be admixed with fatty oils. The compositions may contain pour-point depressants, viscosity index improvers, blooming agents, corrosion inhibitors, oiliness agents and solubilizers, such as isobutylene and alkyl styrene polymers, wax-naphthalene condensation products, sodium, lithium, diisopropylammonium or dicyclohexylammonium nitrite, trichloroethyl or tricresyl phosphate, phosphorus sulphide-terpene reaction products, calcium or zinc dicyclohexylthiophosphate or methylcyclohexylthiophosphate, wax disulphide, ethylene bistolyl sulphide, octadecylamine, stearyl alcohol, oleic acid and sorbitan mono-oleate. Examples describe the production of copolymers of lauryl methacrylate and 2-methyl-5-vinyl- or 4-vinyl-pyridine in the presence of benzoyl peroxide or alpha, alphaazodiisobutyronitrile as catalyst.
