Abstract

Alkyl maleates and vinyl esters, e.g. decyl maleate and vinyl acetate, are copolymerized at a temperature of 30-60 DEG C. in an inert solvent, in the presence of 0.1 to 5 per cent of a peroxide catalyst and a reduction-oxidation activator combination comprising 0.01 to 0.5 per cent of a ferric salt of an oil-soluble fatty acid, e.g. ferric laurate, oleate, stearate or palmitate and 0.1 to 5 per cent of an oil-soluble substance containing hydroxy and/or carbonyl groups, e.g. benzoin, acetol, diacetone alcohol, diacetyl acetone and acetonyl acetone. The catalysts may be benzoyl, p-chloro- and p-bromo-benzoyl, or acetyl peroxide, dibenzaldiperoxide, lauryl peroxide, cumene hydroperoxide and tertiary butyl perbenzoate and hydroperoxide. Suitable inert solvents are chloroform, n-heptane, toluene, methyl ethyl ketone, diisobutyl ketone isopropyl ether, ethyl acetate, methylene chloride and pyridine. The copolymers may be used as additives for lubricating oils. Specification 655,068 is referred to.ALSO:A lubricating composition comprises a mineral base lubricating oil and a minor proportion of an alkyl maleatevinyl ester copolymer. The addition of, e.g. decyl maleate-vinyl acetate copolymer to the oil improves the viscosity index and imparts excellent pour and shear stability. Additional oiliness agents, antioxidants, metal deactivators, rust inhibitors, detergents, extreme pressure additives and tackiness agents may be included. Specification 655,068 is referred to.
