Abstract
943,096. Laminates. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 25, 1961 [Nov. 17, 1960], No. 39526/60. Heading B5N. Films, fabrics, fibres, filaments, &c. of polyolefins, particularly isotactic polypropylene, are bonded to elastomers such as natural or synthetic rubber with the aid of polyfunctional reagents such as polyisocyanates by pretreatment of the polyolefin to introduce amino-, hydroxyl-, or sulphhydryl-groups. In examples, fabrics of isotactic polypropylene were treated with chlorine under U.V. and then (a) with aqueous hexamethylene diamine under pressure at 110‹ C. or with aqueous ammonia; (b) with aqueous sodium hydroxide under pressure at 120‹ C.; and (c) with saturated aqueous potassium hydrogen sulphide under pressure at 120‹ C. The treated fabrics were immersed in a trichlorethylene solution of toluene pdiisocyanate and bonded to natural rubber or neoprene by curing at 140‹ C.
