Ice-making apparatus in which water is frozen in a layer on a refrigerating surface, comprises a roller having radial ice-engaging projections and a scraper or cutter for breaking up the ice along lines of fracture initiated by the projections, the ice being broken up by relative motion between the surface and the roller and scraper, and the roller being rotated at a speed substantially corresponding to pure rolling motion relative to the surface. The apparatus shown in Fig. 1 is specially designed for forming ice from sea-water for cooling fish. A refrigerant flows in the space between cylinders 1 and 2, and causes water which is supplied via bore 8 in rotary shaft 6 and distributing compartment 10, to be frozen on the inner surface of cylinder 1, the water being directed down the surface by a cylindrical shield 26. The roller 17 is carried by arms 13, 14 fixed to the shaft 6 and has a gear-wheel 21 which meshes with a fixed gear ring 20, Fig. 2, so that as the shaft rotates the chisel edges 19 of projections 18 perform a pure rolling motion relative to the surface of the cylinder 1 thus holding the layer of ice stationary while it is broken up by scraper 24, mounted on an extension of the arm 13. The broken ice drops down within a screen 25 through openings formed between frame members 4, and excess water collects in annular gutter 3 and is pumped back to the bore 8. In alternative arrangements, the cylinder 1 may be rotated and the axis of the roller kept stationary, the ice may be formed on the outer surface of the cylinder, and the cylinder may be horizontal instead of vertical. Also, the refrigerated surface may be plane instead of being cylindrical.
