Abstract
942,881. Cooling discharge apparatus. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. June 19, 1961 [June 27, 1960; July 21, 1960], No. 22088/61. Heading H1D. An ion or electron collector for dissipating the energy of a beam of charged particles, e.g. in a klystron or travelling wave tube, comprises a tubular member 11 having on its outer surface an array of longitudinally directed peripherally spaced cooling fins 13<SP>1</SP> defining between them an array of channels 13, a baffle 14 surrounding the fins and channels, the tubular member, fins, channels and baffle constituting a first cooling annulus, an end wall 12 closing one end of the tubular member and having on its outer surface an array of spaced cooling fins 13<SP>1</SP> radiating outwardly from the central region of the end wall, a closure member 15 upon the outside of the radiating fins and providing with these fins and end wall 12, a second cooling annulus communicating with the first cooling annulus, and distributer means communicating with the first and second cooling annuli and providing an input passage 22 and an ouput passage 23 for a coolant. An outer jacket 16 surrounds and is spaced from the baffle 14, and the end wall 12 is either conical or circular. The baffle is preferably of a material of substantially lower thermal conductivity than the cooling fins, e.g. of stainless steel. The width of each channel is substantially equal to the height of each fin, but is less than the width of each fin, the width of each fin being substantially equal to the thickness of the tubular member at the base of the channels. In another embodiment, Figs. 4, 5 and 6 (not shown), the end wall is a circular plate and radial channels thereon are in communication with alternate channels only on the tubular member, coolant flowing in opposite directions along adjacent channels on the tubular member.
