Abstract
942,791. Spinning. ELECTRONICS (BRADFORD) Ltd., N. A. D. WALKER, and G. C. L. CAMPBELL. Dec. 3, 1959 [Sept. 4, 1958], No. 28381/58. Headings DID and D1F. In the detection and electrical indication of the presence or absence of an end of yarn on a spinning or twisting machine (and, if required, the operation of a stop-motion in response thereto) a feeler device, sensitive either to continuous pressure caused by its contact with successive yarn ends or to continuous vibration caused by intermittent contact with it of the ballooning yarn, is continuously traversed between the ends of the machine and close to the paths of the yarns. The feeler may extend lengthwise of the machine over a distance slightly greater than that between adjacent spindles. As shown, yarn t is delivered by rollers 1,2, through guide 3 to be wound by a ring 4 on to a spindle 5. A trolley or carriage 10 is moved, as by means of a cord or wire driven by a reversible motor (not shown) so that detector mechanism such as a transducer 7 with a spring-biased feeler 8 which normally rests lightly on successive yarns, traverses the machine. Movement of feeler 8 from normal position actuates a switch, or relay controlling a mechanical clutch, to stop the machine and give an alarm signal. In another embodiment the vibrations are normally transmitted to the diaphragm of a microphone (carried on trolley 10) the output of which is applied to an electro-magnetic relay: when a yarn breaks, the output fails and the relay is released to operate a warning and/ or selective indicating device and arrest the motion of the trolley or close a clamp to break the sliver entering the rollers 1,2. The detector may be suppressed during doffing and for a short period thereafter to prevent false indications. If a fault occurs in the detector circuits or the trolley wire breaks, a time delay (which is adjusted to a slightly longer period than the time taken for the trolley traverse) and a switch operated by the trolley ensure that the detector device is switched off and that such action is signalled.
