Abstract

Extrudable polyolefine compositions comprise a copolymer of ethylene and from 2 to 25% mol of a polar comonomer having from 3 to 6 carbon atoms in the molecule and at least one carbonyl oxygen said copolymer preferably having a melt index from 0.1 to 100g/10 min., and from 20 to 40% by weight, based on the total composition, of a uniformly dispersed carbon. Comonomers specified are vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, methyl and ethyl acrylate, methyl and ethyl methacrylate, fumaric acid, maleic acid, maleic anhydride and ethyl maleate. To form a semi-conducting composition to coat electrical conductors a conductive carbon must be used in the composition e.g. acetylene black or oil furnance black. In the examples the copolymers used are ethylene/vinyl acetate and ethylene/methacrylic acid copolymers. Antioxidants, lubricants and other known polyolefine modifiers may be added to the compositions.
