Abstract

A fluid low viscosity siloxane composition which autogenously foams and cures at room temperature comprises a mixture of (1) 60 to 80 parts of a diorganopolysiloxane fluid gum free of terminal hydroxyl, of a viscosity of 1000 to 50000 c.p.s. at 25 DEG C. and of the general formula <FORM:0942744/C3/1> being a monovalent radical at least 85% of which radicals are methyl and n is 1.9 to 2.1, and (2) 40 to 20 parts of a benzene soluble silicone resin composed of R3SiO 1/2 and SiO2 units, R being a monovalent radical at least 90% of which radicals are methyl, the ratio R3SiO 1/2 to SiO2 being 0.7 to 0.96, the composition also including, per 100 parts, 0.017 to 0.17 parts of bound silanic hydrogen which can be rendered available to initiate panning and curing by the addition of 0.1 to 2 parts of a basic catalyst. The bound silanic hydrogen can be furnished by the fluid gum, the silicone resin or a further ingredient e.g. methyl hydrogen siloxane. Fillers can be present e.g. silica, titania, zinc oxide, carbon black, calcium carbonate, iron oxide, barium zirconate, zirconium silicate and quartz. Silicone gums of viscosity above 50,000 may also be added as modifiers, and organic silicates added for toughness. Catalysts used are basic metal carboxylates, examples being given.
